The main destination for international travelers is the Rio de Janeiro International Airport (GIG), named after Antonio Carlos Jobim \u2013 the great Bossa Nova composer and singer. Insinuating and beautiful, the landscape of Rio de Janeiro has enchanted visitors for 5 centuries. A few years after the announcement of the discovery of the new land of Brazil, several of the natural hallmarks of Rio de Janeiro were already pictured in Italian, Dutch, English and, of course, Portuguese maps. By registering the huge bay that opened to the sea as the mouth of a river (rio means river in Portuguese), a Portuguese expedition sent to explore the Brazilian coast coined the name of the region.

\r\nRio de Janeiro hosted seven games of the 2014 FIFA \u2013 World Cup, including the final, at Maracan\u00e3 Stadium. Maracan\u00e3 was originally built to serve as the venue for the 1950 World Cup. It was meant to become the largest football stadium in the world and it is estimated that more than 200,000 people witnessed the 1950 World Cup final game from the stands. When Brazil was awarded the 2014 World Cup in 2007, it was clear that Maracan\u00e3 would host the final game and then went through a massive redevelopment. At the same time historic and modern, Maracan\u00e3 now has a capacity of 79,000 seats.

\r\nRio de Janeiro hosted the 2016 Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games. The Rio 2016 games provided the best possible environment for peak performances. Athletes enjoyed world-class facilities, including a superb village, all located in a compact layout for maximum convenience. The competition venues were clustered in four city districts: Barra da Tijuca, Copacabana, Deodoro and Maracan\u00e3 \u2013 connected by a high-performance transport ring.

\r\nThe Rio Games also celebrated and showcased sport thanks to the city\u2019s stunning setting. At the same time, Rio 2016 was an opportunity to deliver the broader aspirations for the long-term future of the city, region and country \u2013 an opportunity to hasten the transformation of Rio de Janeiro into an even greater global city.

\r\nThe G20 Leaders\u2019 Summit was held in November 2024 in Rio de Janeiro, with the presence of the leaders of the 19 member countries, plus the African Union and the European Union. The Group of Twenty (G20) is the main forum for international economic cooperation. It plays an important role in defining and strengthening global architecture and governance on all major international economic issues.
