Professor Jian Cao joined Northwestern University shortly after receiving her Ph.D. degree from M.I.T. in 1995. She received her M.S. from M.I.T. and B.S. from Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Currently, she is the Cardiss Collins Professor and Director of Northwestern Initiative for Manufacturing Science and Innovation at Northwestern University. During her tenure at Northwestern, she took a one-year leave at General Motors and a two-year leave at the National Science Foundation as a program director of Materials Processing and Manufacturing (MPM) program. She also served as the Director of Graduate Studies of Mechanical Engineering and has been serving as an Associate Vice President for Research at the university since 2012.
Prof. Cao’s major research interests include innovative manufacturing processes and systems, particularly in the areas of deformation-based processes and laser processes. Her research has integrated analytical and numerical simulation methods, control and sensors, design methodologies to advance manufacturing processes. Prof. Cao has published over 350 technical articles, including over 200 journal articles, 10 book chapters, and 15 patents. She has given nearly 150 invited talks and published op-ed articles.
Professor Cao is an elected Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), ASME, SME, and of the International Academy for Production Engineering (CIRP). Her major awards include the ASME Milton C. Shaw Manufacturing Research Medal (2020), SME Gold Medal (2020), Vannevar Bush Faculty Fellowship from DoD (2019), Charles Russ Richards Memorial Award (2017) from ASME and Pi Tau Sigma, SME Frederick W. Taylor Research Medal (2016), ASME Blackall Machine Tool and Gage Award (2012, 2018), ASME Young Investigator Award (2006) from Applied Mechanics Division, and the NSF CAREER Award.
Prof. Cao is the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Materials Processing Technology and the founding Technical Editor of the ASME Journal of Micro- and Nano-manufacturing. She served as President of the SME North America Manufacturing Research Institute, and Chair of ASME Manufacturing Engineering Division. She is a recipient of the ASME Dedicated Service Award (2011).

Chris began with GE Aviation in 2000 and spent 16 years in engineering, working in systems, advanced turbine blade technology, mechanical systems, and externals integration. During this period, he held several roles of increasing responsibility, including NPI team leader, module manager and subsection manager.
In the late 2000s Chris started working in additive in various forms, including polymer and metal additive, as well as more advanced materials. Chris’s teams in Aviation led to the creation of the LEAP fuel nozzle; the first high-pressure, flight-capable aluminum heat exchanger; the GE Catalyst engine, which took 855 conventional parts and converted them to 12; as well as many other projects that are not public yet.
In October of 2016, Chris helped found GE Additive as the engineering integration leader and then led GE Additive’s AddWorksTM team to accelerate additive adoption across all industries. AddWorks encompasses design, materials, industrialization consulting, low-rate production and prototyping. Chris now leads the GE Additive Engineering & Technology teams, helping advance the state of the art of additive machines and modalities.
Additive manufacturing is a disruptive technology that is transforming the way companies approach design and manufacturing. It has been embraced by a variety of industries to improve parts and systems, streamline supply chains, and reduce time to market. Once primarily a prototyping technology, additive manufacturing has evolved into a viable alternative to traditional machining for full-scale production. Highly regulated industries like aerospace and medical are leading the way and actively producing 3D-printed parts that have been approved for flight and as orthopedic implants. And, as a relatively young manufacturing technology, additive is just getting started.
During this session, GE Additive’s Chris Schuppe will detail his company’s additive journey and how GE Aviation pioneered the use of additive manufacturing to produce metal parts for jet engines, which led to the founding of GE Additive. Chris will introduce the powder-bed fusion technologies that can be used to create innovative parts and introduce various additive applications. He will also explore the industries being positively impacted by the adoption of the technology.

Dragos Axinte is Professor and Chair of Manufacturing Engineering at University of Nottingham, UK as well as Li Dak Sum Chair Professor at University of Nottingham Ningbo. Graduated at University of Galati, Romania, after working in industrial research for nearly eight years, he held two personal NATO Research Fellowships in Italy and Denmark and then moved to UK to carry out research with University of Birmingham and later with University of Nottingham. He was appointed Lecturer in Manufacturing Engineering (2005) and successively promoted to Associate Professor (2007), Reader (2010) and Professor (2011). Since 2009 Dragos is Director of The Rolls-Royce UTC in Manufacturing and On-Wing Technology at University of Nottingham. He is Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Machine Tools and Manufacture and Fellow of International Academy of Production Engineering (FCIRP). Dragos has over 150 in top journal papers and over 20 granted international patents filed with industry partners.
Dragos research interest is in the following main areas: Advanced machining and finishing technologies, Energy beam machining (e.g. waterjet machining, laser ablation, focused ion beam), Workpiece surface analysis, Process monitoring, Design of portable machine tools, Design of innovative robotics for in-situ repairs in hazardous environments.

Prof. Dr.-Ing Aloisio Nelmo Klein, born in 1950, graduated in Physics in 1976 at Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), where he also completed his Master’s degree in Metallurgy and Materials in 1979. After completing his Doctoral degree at University of Karlsruhe (Germany) in 1983, he returned to the Mechanical Engineering Department at Federal University of Santa Catarina (Campus Florianópolis), where he has joined in February 1979. He has experience in Materials Engineering, with emphasis on Powder Metallurgy and Sintered Materials and Application of Plasma Technology to Powder Metallurgy and Sintered Materials. He has been the Leader of the Materials Laboratory (LabMat / UFSC) since 1984. He is the author or co-author of 181 articles published in journals and 216 in conference proceedings, 139 patent letters (granted + pending), supervised 99 graduate students (master’s, doctorate and post-doctorate). He received several awards and honorable mentions (UFSC, SBPMAT, CCB, ABC, CAPES). Prof. Klein is a CNPq Research Productivity Scholar of Level 1A.

Prof. Dr.-Ing Marion Merklein, born in 1973, graduated in Materials Science at FAU in 1997. After completing her doctoral degree in 2001, she achieved her habilitation in 2006 and promptly received an appointment offer from the University of Saarland. Professor Merklein declined this and subsequent offers from renowned universities in Scotland and the USA in preference for the FAU, where she has held a professorship at the Chair of Manufacturing Technology since April 2008. From March 2010 until September 2011, she was the first vice dean at the Faculty of Engineering and she was subsequently appointed as the dean of the Faculty of Engineering in September 2015.
Professor Merklein’s expertise is welcomed by many committees and scientific associations. She is a member of Arbeitsgemeinschaft Umformtechnik, the German Academic Society for Production Engineering, the International Academy for Production Engineering, the German National Academy of Sciences, the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Science and Engineering acatech. Professor Merklein is also a member of several committees of the German Research Foundation and the German Council of Science and Humanities.
Merklein is also a member in several research networks, some of which she also co-ordinates and a member of scientific committees of international conferences such as the International Conference on Technology of Plasticity, SheMet and Numisheet. As an outstanding researcher she has also won numerous awards including the Heinz Maier Leibnitz Prize and the DFG Leibniz Prize. In addition, she regularly contributes to scientific journals as an expert editor and reviewer.
Professor Merklein was appointed as the Officer for the site development of the Faculty of Engineering in January 2017.

He was a member of the International Scientific Committee of about 40 congresses and president or vice-president of six of them.
Since 2008 he is a Fellow of the International Society of Optics and Photonics (SPIE). Member of IMEKO TC04 – Technical Committee for Optics and Photonics of the International Measurement Confederation.
He is a CNPq Research Productivity Scholar and winner of several awards and titles.
He works in the field of optical metrology, with emphasis on the development and application of techniques and equipment to assess the geometry and residual stresses of pipes and in the area of non-destructive laser testing and since the 1990s he has been working strongly in the oil and gas area.

Prof. Américo Scotti, Mechanical Engineer graduated in 1979, MSc in Manufacturing (1982), obtained his PhD in Welding Technology in 1991 at Cranfield University, UK. He has been working with welding technology since 1982. He has supervised several PhD (18 to date) and MSc students (40 to date) on the related subject. He is at the moment with University West, Sweden. He also works as consultant on welding technology for companies. In 1997 he spent one year as visiting researcher at Idaho National Laboratory, USA. He worked as senior researcher at White Martins Gases Industriais (the Brazilian branch of Praxair) from 2000-2002. He also served as a member of the auditor’s body of ABS-ANB (National authorized body for qualification and certification of personnel in welding), an organ accredited by IIW (International Institute of Welding). It is also accredited by Inmetro as specialist in the accreditation standards ABNT NBR ISO/IEC 17021, ABNT NBR ISO/IEC 17024 and ABNT NBR ISO/IEC 17065, for evaluation of product certification bodies (OCP).
He is classified as Researcher 1A by CNPq (the Brazilian central agency for research development). He is author of 2 printed books and 2 book-chapters on welding and published 140 papers in scientific journals to date and more than 200 papers presented in conferences. He has 6 registered patents as co-author. He is editor-in-chief of Welding in the World. He is active in the International Welding Institute, where he has already held a seat at the Board of Director (2015 to 2019) and at the Technical Management Board (2007 to 2010 and 2014 to 2017) and chaired the Study-Group Research and Collaboration (2012 to 2019). In July 2019, he received the honor of “Fellow of IIW”, recognition for lifetime achievement through distinguished contributions to the field of welding science and technology, and for promoting and sustaining the professional stature of the field. He has been recently granted the “2020 IIW-India Life Excellence award” as an eminent international person who has contributed immensely to the advantage of the welding science. Recently (Sep 2020), he was distinguished with the Senai Nadir Dias Figueiredo award for relevant personal and professional contributions to the welding area in Brazil.

Dr. Stephen Veldhuis is a Professor in the Mechanical Engineering Department at McMaster University and Director of McMaster Manufacturing Research Institute (MMRI). Through his involvement in the MMRI, Dr. Veldhuis has worked with many researchers and industrial partners on high performance manufacturing technologies specifically targeting machining.
His areas of interest in high-performance manufacturing include: continuous improvement through Lean initiatives targeting tooling improvements and process development/optimization and Industry 4.0 technologies including process modeling, sensor integration, industrial Internet of Things (iIOT) and Machine Learning (ML), all of which are applied to realize the higher levels of digitization needed on the shop floor to drive better decision making.
