Women in Science

In this Special Session, four well-established women scientists will discuss the challenges of being a respected professional, the values to be considered, how to work around difficulties and, finally, they will show some perspectives regarding the future of science in Brazil.

Aline Souza de Paula

Federal University of Brasília

Graduated in Mechanical Engineering from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (2005), Master’s degree (2007) and PhD (2010) in Mechanical Engineering from COPPE / Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. She is currently adjunct professor of the mechanical engineering department at the University of Brasilia. Has experience in Mechanical Engineering, focusing on Dynamics and Vibrations, acting on the following subjects: vibrations, nonlinear dynamics, chaotic behavior, chaos control, smart structures.

Marcia Barbosa Henriques Mantelli

Federal University of Santa Cantarina

Graduated in Mechanical Engineering from the State University of Campinas (1982), Master’s degree in Engineering and Space Technology from the National Institute for Space Research (1985) and a PhD in Mechanical Engineering – University of Waterloo (1995). She is currently a full professor at the Federal University of Santa Catarina. Has experience in Mechanical Engineering, focusing on Thermal Engineering, acting on the following subjects: thermal control of satellites, bolted joints, thermosiphons and heat pipes. She is a full member of the National Academy of Engineering.

Maria Luiza Sperb Indrusiak

Coordinator of National Combustion Network/Director of SI Energy Systems Center Consulting and Research

She holds a degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (1976), a master’s degree (1997) and a PhD (2004) in Mechanical Engineering from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul. Has experience in Mechanical Engineering and Energy, focusing on Transport Phenomena, acting on the following subjects: turbulence and heat transfer, signal analysis, energy production systems. He worked at the State Electric Energy Company – CEEE, the Electric Power Thermal Generation Company – ELETROBRÁS / CGTEE, the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul – PUCRS, the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul – UFRGS and the University of Vale of the Rio dos Sinos – UNISINOS. She is a researcher at the National Combustion Network and the Coal Network. She is a member of the Technical Committee of Fluid Mechanics and Secretary of the Southern Regional of the Brazilian Association of Engineering and Mechanical Sciences – ABCM. She is Coordinator of RNC – National Combustion Network, Brazilian Section of the Combustion Institute.

Polliana Cândida Oliveira Martins

Federal Institute of Goiás/Federal University of Brasília

She is currently Professor at the Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology of Goiás (Campus Valparaíso). PhD student in Mechanical Sciences at the University of Brasilia, master’s in mechanical engineering from the Federal University of Uberlândia (2014) and graduated in Mechanical Engineering from the Federal University of Uberlândia (2011). Has experience in the area of Mechanical Engineering, focusing on Mechanical Projects, Vibrations, Solid Mechanics and Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering, focusing on aeroelasticity, aeroservoelasticity, viscoelasticity and aeroelastic control.
